Stroke responsible for 181 deaths at Eastern Regional Hospital

Data from authorities at the hospital for the year 2016 state that out of 1,389 deaths recorded, 181 were as a result of stroke.

One-hundred and eighty-one patients have reportedly died from stroke at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua for the year 2016.

Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), also known as stroke, refers to the sudden death of some brain cells due to lack of oxygen.

The dangerous disease could render one ineffective and incapable of moving.

Data from authorities at the hospital state that out of 1,389 deaths recorded, 181 were as a result of stroke.

In an interaction with the media, Dr.Kwame Anim Boamah who serves as the Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital said stroke had taken over as the leading killer of patents in the region.

According to him, cardiovascular diseases such as high blood, cholesterol levels, diabetes and hypertension can be avoided by practicing healthy living and going for regular check-ups.

He added that 79 patients died as a result of other heart-related diseases, while HIV/ADIS, septic shock, head injury and sickle cell, liver cirrhosis, pneumonia, birth asphyxia, kidney diseases, prostrate cancer, breast cancer, and tuberculosis all make up the top 20 causes of deaths in the region.
