The Minister of Aviation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has ordered the demolition of illegal structures on 3,000 acres of land acquired by the government in the Central Region for the construction of an ultra-modern airstrip.

The Minister said this when she paid a working visit to inspect the land which is at Ataabadze, a community in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA).

She appealed to the encroachers to stop their illegal acts. She said that “we are now giving them a human face to appeal to them to stop as technical men will soon come to inspect the land.”

The Minister said the Traditional Council, the Regional Minister together with the KEEA Municipal Assembly and other stakeholders must ensure that there is “an open space to develop the aviation industry in the region.”

The Minister said the construction of an airstrip in Central Region will reduce the stress many tourists go through when they visit Ghana and want to visit the sites in the region.

“We don’t want people to sit in the plane for eight hours and come and drive through Budumburam to visit Kakum National Park or Elmina Castle”.

She added that the project will start with an airstrip, and “later on, when we get a lot of funding, we can develop it into a tarmac which will take bigger aircraft.”

This airstrip when completed is expected to solve some of the transportation challenges in the Central Region. Even though the region has a lot of tourists sites the transportation network makes it difficult and tiring to visit the region.
