Of course, growing up a dancer, Julianne has always been in tune with her bodybut, she admits, there have been times when she felt less than secure in her own skin. That was especially the case after an endometriosis diagnosis in 2008 .
An estimated one in 10 U.S. woman have endometriosisa condition in which the tissue lining the uterus (the endometrium) forms outside of it, causing severe pelvic pain during menstruation and sex according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists .
For Julianne, the diagnosis left her feeling detached from her body. It was only after she accepted the endometriosis as part of her rather than a problem that she was able to see it in a new light.
I feel Ive created a more peaceful and harmonious relationship with it, she says, adding that pelvic-floor exercises and an anti-inflammatory diet have helped too.
Part of Juliannes acceptance has also included acknowledging the aspects of her condition that may be out of her control, like getting pregnant (almost 40 percent of women with endometriosis struggle with infertility, according to ACOG ) .
While Julianne has not been told she cant have children, she and her husband, hockey player Brooks Laich, revealed in June that they were starting in vitro fertilization to increase their chances of conceiving. Julianne is choosing to look on the bright side: Ive always put it out there that its going to be okay, she says.
