Fans have been looking forward to The Lovebirds ever since the trailer was released a couple months ago, and when the film wasn't able to be released in theaters due to the coronavirus pandemic, Netflix bought the rights to the movie and released it on their platform.

The Lovebirds follows Leilani and Jibran (played by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani ) as a recently separated couple that goes on the run after witnessing a murder because they believe the police will think they committed it. As you can expect, hijinks ensueincluding Jibran getting kicked in the chest by a horse and the duo accidentally attending an orgyand their predicament is only worsened once they realize that they're also being hunted by a man that they nickname Mustache, the person that carried out the murder that they witnessed.

However, the movie's third act completely turns the story around, and the ending features a twist that most viewers didn't expect.

What happens at the end of The Lovebirds?

After breaking into Tom's phone (a.k.a Bicycle), Leilani and Jibran go to the black-tie event that he was supposed to attend that evening. The event turns out to be a meeting of the secret society Sacrarium, but it quickly turns into an orgy. However, the orgy is stopped once a Sacrarium leader realizes that someone has used Bicycle's bar code to enter the event, and it is revealed that it was Sacrarium that ordered his murder.

The leader tricks Jibran and Leilani into revealing themselves and removing their masks, but the rest of the attendees evacuate when the police suddenly raid the event. Once in police custody, a detective reveals that the couple were being sought as witnesses, not suspects, as Bicycle's murder by Mustache had been caught on camera.

Jibran and Leilani head home, but it turns out that their driver is none other than Mustache, and he reveals that he's a police offer that's also being paid by Sacrarium to help them avoid law enforcement. He also reveals that he ran the photo blackmailing scheme with Bicycle, but he killed him after getting stiffed on a payment.

Now that they know the truth, Mustache drives the couple to the marina to kill them, but they're able to get out of their restraints by using the car's cigarette lighter to melt their zip ties. Jibran and Leilani then attack Mustache, and in the struggle Leilani ends up with his gun. Mustache gets Jibran in a chokehold, but Leilani is able to shoot him when Jibran ducks out of the way. Mustache is then arrested, while Jibran and Leilani make up and get back together.

And remember that Amazing Race argument in the beginning? In a sweet twist, Jibran and Leilani end up competing on the show a year later.
