Viktoria Rebensburg snatched victory away from Ana Drev with an impressive second run in the FIS World Cup giant slalom in Flachau, while Lindsey Vonn crashed out for the second successive time in the discipline.
Rebensburg trailed Drev by 0.04 seconds following the first run, but she produced a strong second showing despite poor visibility due to heavy snowfall in Austria to edge the Slovenian out for her first win of the season with a combined time of two minutes and 29.51 seconds.
The German was first down the slope and posted a time of one min and 12.57secs, which only Drev – the ninth competitor out – managed to better.
Late starters fell foul of the deteriorating conditions and struggled to get close to the early leaders, but Eva Maria-Brem was third, while overall leader Lara Gut placed fourth and Vonn sat 10th, 1.25secs off the pace.
Vonn's day went from bad to worse as she lost her footing during her second run and failed to finish for the second straight giant slalom, while Gut finished.
Brem missed out on a podium as her combined time was not good enough to oust Federica Brignone, while penultimate competitor Rebensburg set the time to beat with a time of one min and 16.94secs evidencing the difficulties posed by the weather.
But Drev, who led the giant slalom in Lienz in December after the first run but failed to complete her second, was slower than Rebensburg in every sector and finished 0.94secs off the pace, though it was enough to earn second place.
Brem retains her lead at the top of the giant slalom leaderboard with 442 points, 22 ahead of Rebensburg who moves into second, while Gut slips to fourth with Brignone also displacing her.
