Dutchman Lars Boom was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after celebrating his stage victory at the BinckBank Tour with a lewd gesture.

The 31-year-old's 'up yours' gesture was reminiscent of British sprint great Mark Cavendish's 'two-finger' celebration when winning a stage on the 2010 Tour de Romandie.

But Boom, who took the BinckBank Tour lead thanks to his victory on Friday's fifth stage, got off lightly in comparison to Cavendish, who was fined 6,000 Swiss francs (5,277 euros, $6,240) and pulled from the race by his then HTC Columbia team.

Boom had not won a race for two years until Friday and Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf speculated that his gesture was to vent his frustration at his Lotto NL Jumbo team over being snubbed for the Vuelta a Espana, which begins later this month.

But he was quick to apologise for his gesture.

"Sorry for the incorrect way I (went) past the finish today," he wrote on Twitter.
