Ricky Ponting believes Shaun Marsh should be replaced by Usman Khawaja in the Australia side for the second Test against West Indies despite his heroics in Hobart last week.

Marsh made an outstanding 182 " his highest score in international cricket " in a record fourth-wicket stand of 449 with Adam Voges (269) as Australia eased to a crushing innings and 212-run victory.

The left-hander also scored 49 in the third Test against New Zealand after getting the nod to replace the in-form Khawaja, who suffered a hamstring injury during the second Test.

Khawaja made centuries in the first two games of the series victory against the Black Caps and is due to make his comeback for the Sydney Sixers against the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash on Sunday.

Former Australia captain Ponting thinks Marsh should make way for Khawaja in the Boxing Day Test against the Windies.

"I think Usman has to come straight back into the side," Ponting said.

"The bottom line is Khawaja was in the best XI at the start of summer. He played beautifully when he had his opportunity."

He added: "Unfortunately I think it's Shaun that has to go back out."
