The assembly had carried out a similar exercise in late October with collaboration from the Ghana Grid Co. Ltd. (GRIDCO), which claimed to have given the squatters notice to vacate the area.

However, some of the squatters have returned to the scene and erected their shops.

The victims had container shops, wooden accommodations and other structures under GRIDCO Pylons.

In an attempt to sustain the exercise to ensure that the demolished areas are not reoccupied, the authorities have again visited the American House which is one of Accra’s plush areas to pull down all structures mounted at unauthorized locations.

The exercise was done under the supervision of military personnel who were at the scene to ensure law and order.

When Pulse.com.gh visited the scene, victims of the demolition could be seen standing hopelessly and counting their losses.

Some of them who spoke to the news team expressed worry, saying they have nowhere to go and all their sources of livelihood have been shuttered.

"We don't have anywhere to go. Though the government gave us notice, it didn't tell us, it'll demolish our properties this morning. Where does the government want us to go?" a squatter said in tears.

"Nana Addo came to this place to campaign so after winning the elections, why is he now sacking us? He shouldn't worry, we'll use our thumb in 2020," another said.

With Christmas and the new year festivities just some few days away, the demolition exercise is undoubtedly a big blow to the victims.

Meanwhile, officials of the Adentan Municipal Assembly declined to speak to the news team and tried to stop them from taking coverage of the exercise.

This particular exercise is not limited to only American House. Squatters living in kiosks along the Accra-Tema motorway have also suffered from the same fate.
