Though the said incident had happened many years before he became president, many are of the view that his revelation is a complete faux pas and unbecoming of a president.

Duterte who does not believe God exists, was delivering a speech about land reform, but digressed to attack the Catholic Church over its alleged sexual abuse scandals.

As part of the speech, he was telling an anecdote about a confession he had made to a priest as a teenager, when he dropped the bombshell.

“I went to the room of the maid. I lifted the blanket”, Rodrigo Duterte revealed.

He added that: “I tried to touch what was inside the panty. I was touching. She woke up. So I left the room.”

Meanwhile, a human rights group, Gabriela has joined other citizens of the Philippines to condemn the president’s admission and called on him to resign, saying he is not worthy to hold the office he occupies.

Gabriela is quoted as saying: “This latest confession has brought shame not only himself but on the entire nation. He has proven himself unworthy of his position and should resign.”

However, as the backlash heightens, especially from feminists who claimed Duterte is notorious for disrespecting women, his spokesperson, Salvador Panelo came out later to claim the president had concocted the story.
