A report by the mirror.co.uk indicated that the said female workers had underperformed throughout the year and were likely to be laid off, but their boss’ way of giving them a second chance was to subject them to what some social media users have described as “employee abuse”.

The incident reportedly happened on stage when beauty and skin care company, Nanchang Jinhuayuan Meiye in China held an end of year gala to mark its 14 anniversary.

The well dressed female workers were made to kneel down on stage in the presence hundreds of other colleagues with an inscription, “Ruthless Team” boldly written on a screen at the background.

When the incident became controversial and the company was being bashed, an unnamed spokesperson reportedly came out to say that "It was a show of team spirit” and that "It happened during the opening of our year-end gala, and only once."
