The former Black left winger was the idol of every Ghanaian in the 1970’s as a result of his exceptional skills.
Mohammed Polo made goal scoring an easy task for his playing mates by splitting defence with his tailored measured passes.
One of such moments came in 1970 while playing for Hearts of Oak at the Accra Hearts of Oak. The Phobians had lost 5-2 in the first leg in Zambia.
And in the second leg the game was heading towards a goalless draw on the hour mark in Accra. The magic of Polo started from that instant as he weaved through the defence of Mufilira Wanderers to create opportunities for the likes of Peter Lamptey and Anas Seidu to get three goals for the host and eventually qualified via the away go rule to the final of the CAF Champions League. The victory was dubbed the Miracle of El-Wak.
Mohammed Polo would play for Dubai Club, Al Wasl in the 1980 and his heroics continued there.
The present generation of football fans didn't get the opportunity to watch, the former Hearts of Oak and Black Stars schemer play.
But Mohammed Polo believes, he was a better dribbler than the legendary Lionel Messi and a footage of a match he dribbled about four players, before scoring for his Dubai club appear to confirm his great prowess.
“Me for instance, I was such a good player on the ball [better] than even Lionel Messi,” ‘Polo’ is quoted as saying by Ghanasoccernet.com in 2011.
“I could do many things with the ball that he cannot do now. "I watch him play regularly and hear people saying he is the best footballer of all time but I disagree and hope most people who watched me will also do same.” He added: “We tend to hype footballers too much nowadays and I can tell you if we had got this kind of hype during our time then Messi would have been nowhere near me.”
