This statue of Michael Essien depicts his legendary status

Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has been immortalized in Kumasi, as a way of recognising his legendary status among Ghanaians.

The 35-year-old is one of the most decorated players to ever emerge from Ghana, having won the hearts of many with his assured performances.

Essien started his football career with local side Liberty Professionals before moving to Europe, where he lined up for top sides like Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Currently plying his trade with Indonesian topflight side Persib Bandung, Essien has seen his outputs appreciated in his homeland, with a statue erected in his honor.

A wonder sculpture of the former Chelsea star has been raised in the Ashanti regional capital of Kumasi.

The artful work has been there for some years now, in honor of one of Ghana's favourite sons.

The statue, which is located on the Boadi Road in Kumasi, has been designed with Essien in a Chelsea jersey, while having a ball at his feet.

Essien has made 58 appearances for the Black Stars since making his debut in 2002. The midfielder was also instrumental as Ghana qualified for a first ever World Cup in 2006.

He also has a number of trophies at club level, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cup titles and a Champions League among others.
