The Nana Addo-led government must ensure that the creation of a paperless transaction system at Ghana’s ports id implemented fully.

This is an appeal by the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Emmanuel Kofi Nti.

He made this call on Monday (August 21. 2017) at a media briefing aimed at informing journalists about the intended paperless migration program on September 1.

He was optimistic a the paperless transaction at the country’s port will help remove all bureaucratic processes as well as eliminate fraud in the system. He added that time will be saved for other activities.

Nti said if the paperless system is successful, it will enhance Ghana’s image internationally.

Once it kicks off, the various trade facilitation institutions at the ports will be expected to operate from one unit while documents pertaining to the clearance of goods or exports at the Tema and Takoradi ports will no longer be done through paper. Although a World Trade Organisation (WTO) requirement, Ghana has lagged behind in ensuring that electronic platforms replace paper at the ports.

In 2012, an attempt to go paperless was halted because some stakeholders in the value chain were unprepared.

Nti finally urged all stakeholders and citizens to ensure that the migration to a paperless transaction system at the ports become reality.
