Bad weather on Friday, July 10 forced the Ghana Air Force MH-17 helicopter in which the first couple was travelling to make a “precautionary” landing in Apatrampa, a suburb of Kumasi.
President John Dramani Mahama and his wife, Lordina, were on their way home from Sunyani, where they had attended the funeral of the mother to Cecilia Johnson, the chairperson of the Council of State.
“While approaching Kumasi a storm with high winds closed in,” the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed in a statement.
The helicopter made the emergency landing in an open field as a precaution and in line with safety procedure.
“The first couple were evacuated by officers of the Central Command to the Residency in Kumasi.
“They have since been flown back to Accra,” the statement indicated.
