My girlfriend is my daughter - viral footballer pleads

Free State Stars Mohammed Anas has cleared the air about an apparent slip of tongue during an interview that became a viral sensation on the internet.

Anas was named Man-of-the-Match following a brace scored in his club's 2-2 draw against Ajax Cape Town in the South African top flight last Friday. During a post-match interview to receive his award, he infamously thanked both his wife and girlfriend.

"Thank you very much for giving me this. And I appreciate my fans, also my wife and my girlfriend..." he said, before impulsively correcting himself amid nervous laughter:  "I mean my wife, sorry to say. I'm sorry, my wife!"

However, Anas, in an interview with the BBC, denied having a mistress, claiming that he was actually referring to his daughter when he mentioned 'girlfriend'.

"My family knows that I call my daughter my girlfriend. That's what I was talking about. I don't have a girlfriend," he said.

The Ghanaian striker, whose gaffe blew up on social media, inspiring many hilarious reactions, said he was surprised by how far his speech had gone.

"I'm famous now - people around the world know me," he said.

The former Maritzburg United man also spoke about his South African wife of seven years, who many speculated would be angry at him after the impression of infidelity created.

"I love her so much. She's given me two beautiful children. She is fine. She knows what kind of man I am so I am not worried," he said.
