Out of o total of 474 law students who sat for the 2017 final Bar exams at the Ghana School of Law, only 91 have passed and are qualified to be called to the Bar.
According to myjoyonline.com, the number of students who have failed completely and would have to repeat the entire course afresh is 206, while 177 students have been referred in one or two papers.
This mass failure has occurred as parliament is in the process of legalizing the Entrance Exams at the Ghana School of Law which has become a matter of controversy.
While the General legal council maintains that the exams are meant to screen student to ensure high standard in the law profession, some are of the view that it is illegal. A US-based Ghanaian lawyer, Professor Kweku Asare is one of the vocal critics of the Entrance Exams at the Ghana Law School.
Meanwhile, there is currently a Legislative Instrument in Parliament going through a 21-day maturation period after which it becomes law, making it legal for the law school to continue conducting the Entrance Exams, unless two-thirds majority of parliament votes against the LI.
