On Friday, he was laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Accra after a memorial service at the forecourt of the statehouse.

In an emotional tribute to her late husband, Barbara said she sent her last text message to her husband on Monday May 14, at 9:12 am after they spoke at 6am.

“For the first time in my life, I experienced a ripping heart on Monday night, I woke up to throw up, I had tummy issues too, I just felt sick,” she said.

Top government officials, MPs, former presidents and celebrities attended Major Mahama’s memorial service.

He died as a Captain but was promoted posthumously to the rank of Major by president Nana Akufo-Addo.

In a tribute, the Vice President has described the fallen soldier as 'a soldier's soldier'.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said the slain soldier was one who was dedicated to his duty and one who deserved to be emulate.

"At the gates of the Military Academy and Training School where his career as a soldier began, there is an inscription that states that they who pass through that gate commit to defend the Nation on land, in the air and on the seas, even at the peril of their lives. If there is ever a soldier who lived this commitment as a religious duty, that was Major Maxwell Adam Mahama," he said.

"The Nation cannot mourn Major Maxwell Adam Mahama enough. Our tears cannot stop flowing as we lay to rest, such a fine example, of not only what it takes to be a soldier, but indeed what it takes to be human."
