The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has once again, failed to elect a Presiding Member after eight elections.

The two contestants in the elections, Nana Adum-hene and Nana Kofi Senya, were both asked to step down for a peaceful election, a plea they considered, paving way for new nominations to be made.

Out of the four new aspirants, one stepped down leaving Michael Adusei Bonsu, Abraham Boadi, and Poku Obeng, to contest the poll for a new presiding member.

After the elections, Boadi polled 65 votes with Bonsu and Obeng polling 59 and 2 votes respectively.

There are considerations that the contestant with the highest number of votes is allowed to stand for a yes or no vote.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Assembly member for Ayigya electoral area in the Ashanti Region, Abdullah Muaza traded blows with and a known serial caller of the governing National Democratic Congress, Yakubu Tony Aidoo.

The brawl ensued after Tony Yakubu Aidoo allegedly accused the Assembly members of the metropolis of being corrupt.

Assembly elections are to be non-partisan as stipulated in the constitution, but political parties are usually involved in the elections behind the scenes.

The governing National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party have been blamed for the  bloody fight for a new presiding member in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

A Local Government expert, George Kyei Baafuor believes power sharing between the two leading political parties will ensure peace in the KMA.
