The Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has cut the tape for the construction of 60 e-libraries throughout the country.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2018 and will be constructed in 60 deprived communities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Prempeh bemoaned the number of public libraries in Ghana which is said is around 60.

He said the government is committed to increasing the number of public libraries, saying he is optimistic the 60 libraries will be completed on time, bring the number to 60.

The Chief Executive Officer of West Blue Consulting, Mrs Valentina Minta, said the project will empower the marginalised communities.

“We are at West Blue Consulting are indeed very honoured to be working with the Ghana@60 Committee to support Ghana’s developmental agenda,” she said.

“As a proud African and fiercely Ghanaian ICT solutions company, we are very passionate about the role Information, Communication and Technology plays in our society, and believe that the Ghana@60 Library Programme will ensure that the marginalised groups in the selected areas are empowered with knowledge to participate fully and actively in society,” she added.

She also noted that the affected communities will be engaged in the designing, construction and management of the project as well as creating job opportunities.

"We will ensure participation of all stakeholders, including designers, construction workers, management and workers who will be employed locally,” she said.

“As we roll up our sleeves to commence work on these projects, we call on individuals, businesses and non-governmental organisations to engage with the Ghana @ 60 Committee and lend their support to make the projects successful,” she said.
