In victory speech, Akufo-Addo promises to be president for all

President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo has in a victory speech promised to be president for all Ghanaians.

"Fellow Ghanaians, you did not elect me to serve one party but to serve the entire nation," Akufo-Addo promised as he took the stage shortly after he was declared winner of the 2016 polls by the Electoral Commission. "The president of Ghana is president for every single Ghanaian without discrimination, malice or ill well to any ethnic group or political or religious affiliation."

He added: "Whether you supported me or not, whether you campaigned for me or not, whether you voted for me or not, I can promise you one thing, I will do my best to serve your interest and put our country back on the path of progress and prosperity," he said.

Akufo-Addo won a historic victory by polling 5, 716,026 million votes to beat the incumbent president John Dramani Mahama who had 4, 713,277 million votes.

Akufo-Addo also promised that he will not disappoint Ghanaians as president of the Republic of Ghana.

He also thanked all those who have helped him and the party to reach this momentous victory.

"I thank Almighty God for granting victory to the NPP and myself in this election...And I thank you the good people of Ghana for this massive show of support and the confidence you gave reposed in me and my party.

"I make this solemn pledge to you tonight, I will not let you down."

Hundreds of Ghanaians poured onto the streets Friday night in a spontaneous outpouring of joy after he was declared president.

Impromptu street parties broke out across the capital, Accra and Kumasi, the stronghold of NPP.
