Deputy General Secretary of PUWU, Michael Nyantakyi, said the recent hike in energy bills is designed toward making ECG attractive for the private investor.

Following the inconsistencies in the details of government’s package to lighten the bills of electricity users, MP for Atiwua Mponua Constituency, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, has called on President Mahama to sack all those managing the country’s power sector.

The member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament said they should be sacked for “deceiving Ghanaians.”

Asiamah told Citi News the issue was not well-thought through as the “ECG came out boldly to tell Ghanaians that indeed Ghanaians are going to enjoy a GHc 300 million subsidy” and the President made a contradictory statement.

There was also a lack of clarity on the package to help people with their bills, which showed that government is confused in its management of the country’s energy sector.

The comments come after the the Ministry of Power and the ECG announced a GHc 300 million subsidy package last Monday, but the President in an address on the Eid celebration on Wednesday said the package was not a subsidy but rather a realignment of tariffs, contradicting the announcement of the Ministry of Power and the ECG.

Later the Power Ministry in a statement, subsequently realigned itself with President Mahama’s claims, confirming the ECG had only realigned its billing system to bring relief to consumers.
