The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has demolished unauthorised structures on its land at CMB at Accra Central business district on Sunday, February 4, 2018.

This is to pave way for the private commercial development of the area.

More than 100 structures were pulled down by the Authority.

An evacuation notice, signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the GRDA, Mr Richard Dombo on February 2, stated that a task force would be dispatched to the area to demolish all unauthorised structures.

"Please be informed that the authority will not be liable for any loss or damage of property resulting from your failure to evacuate from the site prior to the demolition exercise," the notice stated.

"You are accordingly informed that there will not be another warning notice before action is taken to remove any remaining encroachers on the said land.

"So do take heed of this friendly reminder to honour your pledge to vacate the land by the end of January 2018," it added.

Residents of the area have, however, rejected the decision by the GRDA to forcibly eject them from the area, claiming that the matter is under ligation and so any attempt to evacuate them will amount to contempt of court.

A notice from the lawyers of the residents, Afadjato Chambers, to the CEO of the GRDA states in part: "It is the legitimate expectation of my client that you will wait patiently for the final determination of the matter."

According to the lawyers, the planned demolition of the area to pave way for a private commercial development defeated the purpose of the acquisition of the land in 1829 for the development of rail lines without the payment of compensation.
