The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) has sold contaminated fuel to some oil marketing companies.
Documents indicate that BOST has agreed to sell about 5 million litres of contaminated fuel to Movenpinna Energy. Reports suggest Ghana is likely to lose about 7 million cedis in revenue.
This has led to many industry players calling for the suspension of the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BOST in order for an investigation to be conducted.

• If you purchase dirty fuel your engine will begin to performing poorly. Contaminated fuel usually has low octane (a standard measure of the performance of an engine). This means that contaminated fuel can cause issues like ‘knock’, which the knock sensor picks up and the ECU responds by retarding the spark, causing a drop in force.
• You will find it difficult to start your engine than usual
This is because there is lower fuel efficiency as compared to the previous higher quality of fuel you buy.

• Higher levels of certain kinds of emissions
You will agree with me that even with a better quality of fuel some cars on Ghanaian roads have no emission control systems. One can only imagine what will become of us if the contaminated fuel finds its way to the market for sale.
• Reduced Fuel mileage
This means that your car or machine which uses fuel is not running as efficiently as it could. This implies that you will buy fuel more often, which will burden you financially.

The Principal Research Analyst at the Institute of Energy Security (IES), Richmond Rockson has indicated that the sale of the contaminated fuel will have dire consequences on consumers if not stopped immediately.
He said even if the dirty fuel was to be used by manufacturing companies, it was still not right since their machines will also develop faults if they do not use the best quality fuel for their work. He added that it will also be harmful to the workers in such industries.
