The 2016 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo has indicated that evidence gathered from the current biometric register shows the voters' register is flawed.
According to him, "compiling a credible voters' register should be the first step in ensuring we have transparent elections."
At a press conference in Accra, he said Ghana needs a new credible voters' register that must be compiled before the 2016 elections adding that "the paramount concern of NPP politics is to ensure a peaceful Ghana."
He stated that "a valid voters register is essential for a free and fair election and the current register is flawed and cannot be used."
The NPP is pushing an agenda to get the voters' register expunged and replaced with a new one. The party has begun garnering the support of other political parties to join them in their course.
The Convention Peoples Party CPP has so far indicated its readiness to join the NPP in this fight.
The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, on the other hand, has downplayed the NPP's move.
He has accused the NPP of trying to cause confusion with their demand. He claimed the NPP's calculation to arrive at a bloated register is faulty. He said "in 2010 the pollution was around 25 million, and the NPP says the 2012 voters register was 14 million.
