Denmark has said that it is sorry for its involvement in the slave trade in the onetime Gold Coast.
“We share a dark history of slave trade; it is sinful and an unforgivable part of any history. Nothing can justify it, the expectations of men, women and children, in which Denmark took part,” Denmark’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anders Samuelsen said on Thursday, November 23 while interacting with Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
The interaction, which took place in the presence of some Danish and Ghanaian dignitaries, was during a courtesy call on Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, as part of a three-day working visit by Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II in Accra.
Mr Samuelsen said that the Danish government was ready to assist Ghana in improving education and engage in other mutually beneficial bilateral partnerships.
The Queen was accompanied by a delegation of some 39 companies that will be working with their Ghanaian counterparts towards enhanced investments.
Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo has said that his government will continue to build strong ties with Denmark for the benefit of both countries.
