Police at Aboabo-Akurem in the Asokore Mampong municipality of the Ashanti Region have killed a robbery suspect after a fierce gun battle.

The suspect, identified only as Basat Obodo, is said to be a member of a gang which has been terrorising residents in the area.

Eyewitnesses said that the police arrived at the scene following a tip-off and mounted a search in an uncompleted building where the suspects had been lodging.

A shootout ensued resulting in the death of the wanted armed robber.

A police officer also sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment.

The ringleader and other members of the gang managed to escape in the process.

A team of police officers from the Airport District Police Command later arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

The body of the suspect has since been conveyed to the mortuary.

Police said that the suspect was part of a gang which killed a police officer at Tema recently.

Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the three gang members who fled the scene.
