In a viral, poetically written Facebook post from the Questura di Roma (Police in Rome), the event is touchingly described.

Eighty-four-year-old Jole and 94-year-old Michele told police that no one had visited them in months and they were desperately saddened by the state of the world.

The four policemen, Andrea, Alessandro, Ernesto and Mirko, tasked themselves with comforting the couple, and did so by cooking them pasta with cheese.

The photos show the police cleaning up, and watching the couple enjoy the meal.

The police write the couple are lonely, the TV a form of company, but the news is distressing: “Jole wonders why such wickedness”.

The couple, together for almost 70 years, tell the police no one comes to visit them.

“It is not always easy life. Especially when the city is empty and the neighbors are away on vacation.

Sometimes the loneliness melts into tears.

Sometimes it's like a summer storm. It comes suddenly and overtakes one,” police wrote on the post.

“Jole and Michele they love each other. But when the loneliness is a burden on the heart, it may happen that they lose hope.”

Sometimes, the loneliness is so much they “scream so loud in their despair" that someone will call the state police.

“There isn't a crime. Jole and Michele are not victims of scams as often happens to the elderly and no burglar came in the house. There's no one to save.

“This time, for the boys of flying there is a more difficult task to perform.

“There are two lonely souls to reassure.”

The police understand “just a little bit of warmth will bring peace” to the couple, so while waiting for an ambulance to arrive to check them, the ask for permission to access the pantry.

Then the police improvise a dinner for Jole and Michele – pasta with butter and cheese.

And, as the police write, there is also a “ precious ingredient: inside it is humanity."
