Taxes on int. calls killing telcos- Sakyi-Addo

This according to him will make it easier for customers to make international calls through the telecommunication companies instead of resorting to social media calls as a means of communication.

Echoing the sentiments of the Chief Executive Officer of MTN in his address to members of the Institute of Public Relations, Kwaku Sakyi-Addo bemoaned the loss of revenue being suffered by telecommunication companies owing to the fact that Ghanaians are resorting to social media calls as means of communications.

Mr. Sakyi-Addo maintained that government must be as concerned about the growing phenomenon  as the telecommunication companies given that a reduction in the revenues of the telecommunication companies will have a direct effect on the taxes accruing to government.

“Government can certainly help in curbing  the phenomenon”, he says.

“Government’s  decision to charge telecommunication companies $2 million as a gateway fee for international calls is certainly not helping. This has made calls coming into the country very expensive, encouraging people to route international calls through the internet”, he says.

Mr. Sakyi- Addo also asked  “If you have a choice between calling Ghana over the internet for next to nothing…versus calling at 19 cents;  which choice would you make?”
