Here is everything you need to know about the viral game that is breaking the Internet!

It just came out and its free, so it is readily available. It also taps into the nostalgia of the old Pokémon game from the 90s.

Pokémon Go

If you have been on the Internet, or outside of it, over the past few days, you may have noticed some talk on a mobile game called Pokémon Go that is taking the entire world by storm. If you were born before 1984, this may leave you wondering what the hell is going on.

Nintendo launched the Pokémon franchise back in the 90s. In the Pokémon world, "trainers" travel the world to catch various kinds of cute, little monsters called Pokémon's - dragons, sword-like creatures, rats, and more - and then use these monsters to fight each other.

The aim of the trainers was to catch all the Pokémon's, hence becoming a Pokémon master by defeating high level trainers known as gym leaders.

In the 90s, the entire franchise went on to become extremely popular and successful. From games to mugs and Pokémon figurines, endless Pokémon merchandise was disappearing off shelves all over the world fast!

So what is this new Pokémon Go thing that everyone in the world is losing their minds over?

Well, it is a free download mobile game for iOS and Android. Although the gameplay premise is basically the same as the old Pokémon games, Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game - it mixes real-world elements with the game.

How does it work?

Pokémon Go uses your phones GPS and clock to decide which Pokémon will appear in the game. If you're in a park, for example, more bug and grass type Pokémon will appear. If you're by a water body or the beach, more water types appear. If it's at night, fairy or ghost types will appear. So you can't just sit in your house and play the game, you literally have to move around in real life to play the game.

So why is it making everyone go crazy?

It just came out and its free, so it is readily available. It also taps into the nostalgia of the old Pokémon game from the 90s. The game also taps into the fantasy of all Pokémon fans all over the world: What if Pokémon were real, and existed in our world?

It is also a big deal because it is the first readily available and easily available augmented reality game. With the success of the Pokémon game, you can bet that there will be more to come in the future.

Unfortunately, the game is not available in Africa yet so you cannot experience it just yet. It only just became available in the UK today. Niantic (makers of the game and a former in-house Google project) say a global rollout is underway but don't hold your breath.
