Facebook's Messenger app surpasses 800 million users

Facebook also plans to make money from ads on Messenger, but has not said when it will do so
 
 

Facebook Inc's Messenger app grew passed a staggering 800 million users, the company said in a statement on its website today, 7th January.

According to research firm Nielsen, the milestone achieved means it is the fastest-growing app of 2015.

Facebook has made number of changes to improve on how people communicate. Among them include Messenger blazing fast, video calling, the ability to customize conversations with colors, nicknames and emojis.

With Businesses on Messenger, Facebook introduced a new way for businesses to engage their customers by providing them with a delightful, personal experience.

Facebook has more active monthly users than rivals Snapchat and Viber, but still lags the 900 million using WhatsApp, also owned by Facebook, according to Reuters.

“We created all these experiences with a mindset of helping hundreds of millions of people manage their daily interactions with people, businesses, and services more seamlessly than ever,” the statement said.

Facebook has also begun testing M, a digital virtual assistant, and closed the year by launching its transportation platform with Uber.

Facebook also plans to make money from ads on Messenger, but has not said when it will do so.
