A documentary of Egypt's seven AFCON triumphs

The Pharaohs have an enviable record in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and below is a brief video of how they won their titles.

Sudan 1957

Egypt were the first team ever to win the Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament was held for the first time in Sudan in February 1957 with only three teams participating; Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan while South Africa - one of the founding members of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) - was disqualified due to its apartheid policies.

The Egyptians after winning the maiden edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ethiopia (AFCON) defended their title two years later on home soil.

The Pharaohs of Egypt hammered Ethiopia 4-0 in the opener in a game El-Gohary bagged four goals and went ahead to beat Sudan in the grand finale to make it two out of two.

Egypt 1986

The Pharaohs following three decades of failing to lay their hands on the prestigious trophy, finally made it three in 1986 in an eight nation AFCON.

They defeated Cameroon in a titanic final which travelled into penalty shootout.

Burkina Faso 1998

Egypt cruised to victory again - on this occasion for the first time on West African soil, to equal Ghana as the most successful nation in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The team was inspired by Hossam Hassan who scored 7 goals to help Egypt win the continental showpiece staged in Burkina Faso.

Egypt finished second in a group their group, after they edged Mozambique 2-0 and defeated Zambia 4-0, before losing 0-1 to Morocco.

The Pharoahs after the defeat against Morocco at the group stage cleared all the hurdles and in the end defeated South Africa, the defending champions 2-0 in the final.

Egypt 2006

This edition marked the rise of a golden generation that would dominate Africa for years to come.

Egypt enjoyed the support of home supporters, with a packed Cairo Stadium hosting thousands of enthusiastic supporters and, maybe for the first time in the country's footballing history, many families in an unusual friendly atmosphere. The Pharoahs were guided by a master tactician named Hassan Shehata, who would go on to win three titles on the trot for the North African nation.

They faced the Ivory Coast in the final, and it was a game with everything involved, since the two nations had met at the group stage. The game ended in a draw, but the Pharaohs won the penalty shootout to realize a dramatic host and win dream. The villain on the day was the skipper of the Ivorian team, Didier Drogba who was one of the players who missed a kick for the Elephants.

If some had deemed Egypt's 2006 Nations Cup triumph a fluke because it was staged on home soil, there were no doubts about the second straight win in Ghana two years later.

Egypt displayed an attractive brand of football with devastating counter attacks against some of the continent's heavyweights including Cameroon and Ivory Coast.

The Elephants, fresh from a 5-0 rout of Guinea, were stunned by a 4-1 defeat, with Egypt proving too good with a brace from burly frontman Zaki and goals from Ahmed Fathi and Abou-Treika.

In the final, Cameroon tried to avoid a repeat of the group-stage opening defeat, closing down spaces at the back. However, they were undone by a goal from Abou-Treika with 14 minutes remaining.

No other nation has managed to break the record Egypt has of seven title wins.
