Garbine Muguruza may not have been at her fluent best in her Wimbledon opener on Monday but she was able to find enough positives.

The French Open champion - who was the beaten finalist at the All England Club 12 months ago - battled her way past Camila Giorgi in three sets on Monday to move into the second round.

Muguruza's 6-2 5-7 6-4 win on Centre Court showed brief glimpses of her undoubted quality on grass, and the 22-year-old knows she has plenty to build on.

"It is a very tricky tournament, sometimes the grass can give you surprises, all the matches are more equal  [than on other surfaces]," Muguruza told a media conference.

"I had a very tough match today but I'm going to take the positives, good to start [with a win] on the grass and I'm pretty happy about this match.

"Sometimes you don't win beautiful, you've just got to be there and fight for the match."

Muguruza will meet Jana Cepelova in the next round, the qualifier having beaten Mariano Duque-Marino 7-5 7-5.
