Tomic keen on Rio Olympics

Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic could miss the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with a heavy schedule of Masters Series events in the lead up to the US Open.

Tomic has already qualified for the Olympics and is keen to play should it fit in his schedule.

The Olympic tennis events runs from August 6-14, squeezed between mandatory men's Masters Series events in Montreal, starting July 25, and Cincinnatti, starting August 15.

"I'd like to play it. It's a huge opportunity that happens only once every four years," Tomic told the Courier-Mail.

"If the opportunity comes up, I will see what the schedule is. There are Masters series tournaments [in August] and if I'm ready I'd like to play for sure.

"I played at the Olympics in 2012 and lost in my first round. It's an interesting competition."

Tomic is in Brisbane ahead of the Brisbane International, where he will take on Nicolas Mahut in his opening match, leading into the Australian Open.

A dispute between Tomic and Tennis Australia, after the top-ranked Aussie criticised the governing body's policies and executives, saw the 23-year-old stood down for two Davis Cup ties in 2015.

However, Tomic insists he remains keen to represent Australia in the competition.

"If they select me for Davis Cup, I'm always ready to play," Tomic said.

"Its schedule is very rough, but it's Davis Cup and from my heart I really enjoy playing Davis Cup.

"We are on the right path and I can't wait for 2016 to start, to put [being stood down] behind me.

"That's one of the reasons why I played well the last few months. We are all happy."
