Tennis: Yanina Wickmayer takes out WTA Citi Open

Yanina Wickmayer was too good for Lauren Davis in Sunday's final as the Belgian seventh seed clinched the WTA Citi Open.

Contesting her first final of the year, Wickmayer eased past the American 6-4 6-2 at the WTA International tournament in Washington.

A four-time winner on the WTA Tour, with her last coming in Japan in 2015, Wickmayer saved two break points and converted two of her own to take control of proceedings in the American capital.

Playing her maiden final, Davis – who upstaged third seed Monica Puig en route to the decider – was no match for Wickmayer, who continued where she left off in the second set, breaking in the opening game and again in the third for a commanding 3-0 lead.

Davis did show some fight, avoiding a second-set bagel, getting on the board twice to make Wickmayer work for her victory, which was wrapped up in an hour, 32 minutes.
