Defending champion Serena Williams strolled into the second round of the French Open with a straight-sets victory over Magdalena Rybarikova on Tuesday.

Williams is aiming to equal Steffi Graf's Open-era record of 22 grand slam titles at Roland Garros and the world number one started with an emphatic 6-2 6-0 thrashing of outsider Rybarikova in only 42 minutes.

Rybarikova was hampered by injury and Williams, eyeing a fourth victory on the famous clay in Paris, showed no mercy on the Slovakian in a one-sided match on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Williams, who won her first tournament in nine months in Rome this month, went a break up with a simple backhand but was pegged back at 2-1 after paying the price for a sloppy service game.

The 77-ranked Rybarikova was clearly not fully fit and Williams took full advantage, claiming another two breaks to take the first set in clinical fashion.

The legendary American was in a hurry to get the job done, making only five unforced errors in the match and totally dominating the second set to set up a meeting with Teliana Pereira or Kristyna Pliskova.
