Raonic, Djokovic progress to the third round in Toronto

Milos Raonic and Novak Djokovic both had straight-set wins at the Rogers Cup in Toronto to move into the last 16.

Novak Djokovic did not have it easy as he moved into the third round of the Rogers Cup with a straight-sets win over Gilles Muller.

World number one Djokovic secured a 7-5 7-6 (7-3) victory in one hour and 43 minutes, while fourth seed Milos Raonic progressed courtesy of a 6-3 6-3 win over Lu Yen-hsun at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

Fellow seeds Gael Monfils, David Goffin, Kei Nishikori, Bernard Tomic and Jack Sock also progressed, with injury bringing a premature end to sixth-seed Dominic Thiem's tournament as he retired against Kevin Anderson. BIG GUNS PROGRESS

Djokovic's straight-set win was a little harder than the scoreline suggested against Muller as the Frenchman made him sweat on a number of occasions.

Muller broke Djokovic twice throughout the match but failed to take his chances as he himself was broken three times on the way to defeat.

Nishikori, meanwhile, made light work of qualifier Dennis Novikov with a 6-4 7-5 win that took less than 90 minutes to complete.

The Japanese star converted five out of nine break points on the way to victory.

Raonic put on the most dominant display of the three biggest names in action as he dismantled Yu 6-3 6-3 in just over an hour, serving eight aces and breaking his opponent three times.

Monfils knocked off Vasek Pospisil 7-6 (8-6) 6-0, Goffin beat Sam Querrey after the latter retired at 6-4 2-1, Tomic beat Steven Diez 6-3 7-6 (7-4), and Sock triumphed 6-4 6-3 over fellow American Donald Young.

TWO SEEDS EXIT

Thiem was joined by Marin Cilic as the only two seeds to exit the tournament, after he lost to fellow Croatian Ivo Karlovic 6-4 7-6 (7-3). MULLER MIGHT NOT ENOUGH

Muller might have lost in straight sets to world number Djokovic, but his serve gave the Serbian plenty to think about.

The Frenchman fired down 11 aces in the defeat but still only managed to win 70 per cent of points on first serve compared to Djokovic's 77 per cent. EFFICIENT MILOS PROUD TO BE CANADIAN

Raonic was surprised by his performance as he cruised through to the third round of his native Rogers Cup.

The hometown favourite described his performance as efficient and had nice words for the state of Canadian tennis.
