Grigor Dimitrov will take on Viktor Troicki in the final of the Sydney International after a hectic day overshadowed by Bernard Tomic's controversial retirement.

None of Thursday's quarter-finals were finished due to rain, with Tomic unable to start his last-eight contest with Teymuraz Gabashvili.

The top seed was trailing 6-3 3-0 when he retired after a bizarre exchange with umpire Mohamed Lahyani in which he admitted he was more focused on the upcoming Australian Open, where he will play Denis Istomin in the first round.

Afterwards Tomic - who admitted to feeling unwell and struggling for sleep overnight - later told a media conference: "If I was 100 per cent and ready and not feeling the way I was I would for sure fight on court and have tried to win the match and this event.

"I told him [the umpire] two matches today, sick, trying to win the tournament to go up one spot. It doesn't sound good for me, does it?"

Gabashvili went on to lose 3-6 6-4 6-4 to Troicki - who had earlier won his quarter-final with Nicolas Mahut, which was called to a halt at 2-2 in the first set, 4-6 6-3 6-3.

Fourth seed Dimitrov saw his quarter-final with Alexandr Dolgopolov suspended with the Bulgarian just games away from victory.

And he wrapped up the match 4-6 6-3 6-4 in relatively short order, winning both his service games to love to set up a last-four clash with Giles Muller, who he saw off in straightforward fashion.

Muller - whose last-eight affair with Jeremy Chardy was paused after he won the first set - completed a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 defeat of the Frenchman but was beaten 6-2 7-6 (7-4) by Dimitrov.
