David Ferrer through to ASB Classic quarter-finals

David Ferrer made light work of securing his place in the last eight of the ASB Classic, beating Matthew Barton 6-2 6-4 in Auckland.

Four-time champion David Ferrer coasted into the quarter-finals of the ASB Classic with a straight-sets victory over rank outsider Matthew Barton on Wednesday.

Top seed Ferrer is aiming to regain the title he won three years in a row from 2011 to 2013 and breezed into the last eight with a 6-2 6-4 win over Australian qualifier Barton.

The world number eight from Spain did not allow his opponent a look-in, with Barton unable to force a solitary break point and failing to hold serve on three occasions.

Ferrer won 88 per cent of points on his first serve and will be eager to build further momentum ahead of the Australian Open, which starts next week, by seeing off Lukas Rosol in the quarter-finals.

The unseeded Rosol dumped out fifth seed Benoit Paire with a 6-4 7-6 (7-5) victory on day three of the ATP World Tour 250 event.

Frenchman Paire is 36 places above Rosol in the world rankings, but a break in the first game of the match enabled the Czech to take the opening set and he then edged a tie-break to go through.

Second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ousted Philipp Kohlschreiber with a 6-3 6-4 success, while two-time champion John Isner needed three sets to come out on top against Sam Querrey in the battle of the American big servers.

Kevin Anderson, Fabio Fognini and Roberto Bautista Agut were the other seeds to advance, while Jack Sock got the better of Vasek Pospisil.
