Serena Williams is the best female athlete in the world after a dominant 2015 that saw her claim three grand slams, according to Andy Murray.

Williams was in sensational form throughout the calendar year as she lifted the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles " cementing her place as world number one.

She was unable to complete a calendar grand slam at the US Open, though, as she was beaten in the semi-final by Roberta Vinci 2-6 6-4 6-4 at Flushing Meadows.

The 34-year-old - who finished the year with a 53-3 record - was subsequently named sportsperson of the year by Sports Illustrated, an accolade Murray believes is well deserved for the top female tennis player.

"It's great for tennis," he told Omnisport. "Serena's year was incredible, she came extremely close to doing something that so few players will ever have the opportunity to do.

"She obviously won the first three slams and was in the semi of the fourth.

"I think the pressure was huge, people have been talking about it for a long time, I'd imagine Serena would have thought about it for a long time as well, but her year as a whole was incredible, it was a shame she couldn't win all four.

"She's definitely the best female sportsperson in the world right now, she's been so dominant and at her age what she is doing is extremely impressive and I hope she can keep it up."
