Andy Murray beats Liam Broady at Wimbledon
Andy Murray cruised into the second round of Wimbledon by beating fellow Brit Liam Broady in straight sets on Tuesday.
The world number two is ranked 233 places above Englishman Broady and the gulf in class was evident as he eased to a 6-2 6-3 6-4 victory on Centre Court.
Second seed Murray came into his home grand slam on the back of winning a record fifth title at Queen's and hit the ground running at the All England Club on day two, ruthlessly sweeping the left hander aside in an hour and 42 minutes.
The 2013 champion, who has lost both major finals to defending champion Novak Djokovic this year, will face Lu Yen-hsun in round two as he attempts to win Wimbledon for a second time.
Murray spoke of the importance of not spending too much time on court in the early rounds after being taken to five sets in the first two rounds of the French Open and he breezed into a 2-0 lead when Broady netted a backhand after being given the runaround.
The Scot earned a first set point by fizzing a backhand winner past a helpless Broady and clinically seized his chance to wrap up the opening set at a canter.
A double fault from Broady put the two-time grand slam champion a break up at 3-1 in the second set and he duly moved a set away from progressing when Broady sliced into the net.
Broady had his moments, including a sublime forehand winner down the line on the run, but failed to hold in the opening game of the third set and was unable to take his only two break points in the sixth as Murray coasted through.
