Great Britain will be led by Mark Cavendish in the elite men's road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Qatar.

Mark Cavendish will look to win his second UCI Road World Championships title next month after being named in Great Britain's squad.

The Olympic silver medallist returned to the track at the Tour of Britain and will head to Qatar trying to repeat his 2011 success that saw him claim the rainbow jersey in Denmark.

Cavendish is not the only member of Britain's Olympic team to be in action at the World Championships - which begin on October 9 - with Steve Cummings, Ian Stannard and Geraint Thomas also included for the men's road race.

"The depth of talent available to us on the road this year has been exceptional and I believe we have picked strong squads for all the races we are entering," said Iain Dyer, head coach for British Cycling.

"In the men's race, Mark heads to Doha as one of the clear favourites given the nature of the course and he will have a strong team around him."

Reigning champion Lizzie Deignan - nee Armitstead - will return to defend her title in the women's road race, the 27-year-old undoubtedly desperate to finish the season on a high after her Rio 2016 experience.

Deignan finished fifth in the road race in Brazil after a troubled build-up involving three missed drugs tests, the British athlete only confirmed for the race a few days before the opening ceremony.

Dyer added: "In the women's squad, we've got some real high-calibre contenders with a couple of riders having the capability to be competitive in a sprint finish scenario."
