A fine first-half brace from Corey Thompson and gutsy defensive effort helped Widnes Vikings edge out 8-6 victors at Wigan Warriors in Super League on Thursday.

Thompson crossed twice inside the opening 29 minutes to stun hosts Wigan at the DW Stadium, his first coming after collecting a Kevin Brown kick to the corner and stepping inside his marker to go over.

It was 8-0 to the visitors when Thompson showed great athleticism to keep in play and ground at full stretch in the air, touching the ball down with one hand.

Ill-discipline threatened to cost the Vikings as Liam Farrell punished one of a spate of penalties by finding a gap from close range to scamper over.

Jack Buchanan and Connor Farrell were both sent to the sin bin as Wigan cranked up the pressure, but Shaun Wane's men were kept at bay as they missed the chance to pull level on points with leaders Hull FC.

"We had chances but we didn't convert them - you have to compliment Widnes," Wane told Sky Sports.
