Confusion surrounds Andrea Iannone's participation in this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix after he injured his back in a crash during Friday practice at Misano.

Ducati rider Iannone came off his bike in FP1 and, despite walking away, was subsequently taken to a local hospital for scans.

An initial announcement via Ducati's Twitter feed ruled the Italian out of Sunday's race in his homeland, with reports suggesting he had suffered a micro-fracture to a vertebra.

However, a second post followed within 15 minutes, suggesting Iannone could yet race.

It read: "Update on @andreaiannone29 declared fit to be reviewed."

Pol Espargaro topped the timesheets on Friday, posting a time of one minute and 32.769 seconds in FP2 after finishing second behind Valentino Rossi in the day's first session.

Championship leader Marc Marquez finished outside the top three in both sessions.
