South Africa coach Allister Coetzee hailed the importance of Saturday's 18-10 Rugby Championship victory over Australia as a boost to his side's confidence.

Morne Steyn - recalled to the team for this match - kicked all 18 of the hosts points in Pretoria in a clash that saw the Springboks' defence come to the fore.

The result marked South Africa's second win of this year's championship and sent them second, ahead of the Wallabies, with one round of fixtures to come.

"It was an important win, not only for our confidence, but also self-belief," said Coetzee, who took over in April.

"I am a very happy man and will never underestimate any Test win.

"For a team that had their backs to the wall, a win like this means a lot and is a definite confidence booster.

"Our defence was outstanding and our set-piece delivered the needed pressure on them when we needed it, which resulted in points for us at crucial times."

Coetzee reserved special praise for Steyn and captain Adriaan Strauss.

"Adriaan's value in leadership and at scrum time showed the great character he has," he added.

"Morne justified his inclusion. He showed he is still a Test-match player. He remains proud to play for the Springboks and that showed."
