Michael Cheika has reassured Australia rugby fans that "tough times breed better times" as the Wallabies look to overcome a poor run of results.

An unprecedented series whitewash at home to England and back-to-back Bledisloe Cup defeats against New Zealand stunted the momentum Australia had built with a run to last year's Rugby World Cup final.

Cheika's men recovered to register home wins over South Africa and Argentina in rounds three and four of The Rugby Championship, but were wasteful in failing to break a 53-year wait for a win at Loftus Versfeld in an 18-10 defeat to the Springboks on Saturday.

Australia return to Twickenham - the site of their World Cup final loss to the All Blacks - to take on Argentina in their final Rugby Championship fixture, and Cheika feels confident that better times lie ahead.

"I think they [the past 12 months] have been good," he said. "I can't complain at all.

"I know everyone sees things always - and I understand totally - from a results point of view, but part of this year for us was going to be about change.

"We knew we had to bring in new players with a view to the future and at a time we have 15 Tests against the top eight countries in the world.

"In my experience in this game, you go through great times and then you can go through tougher times and they'll always lead to giving you the scars on the inside to have better times later on.

"It'll be the making of us in the end because tough times breed better times.

"I don’t want to sound like the cliche guy, but that’s definitely what'll happen."
