David Weir has labelled his Rio 2016 performance as "terrible" and apologised for letting his country down.

The six-time Paralympic gold medallist finished the Paralympics without a medal to his name after finishing sixth in the T54 800 metre final on Thursday, a far cry from his heroics in London.

Four years ago Weir cleaned up with gold medals in the 800m, 1500m, 5000m and the marathon and he was favourite to defend his titles in Brazil.

However, things did not go to plan for the 37-year-old and he announced his retirement following his final event.

Now Weir has apologised for his performance and spoke of his disappointment at missing his son's birth.

"I came out to Rio with every intention of getting a medal. My training had been amazing, I felt fit and strong, and I was ready for Rio," he said.

"I don't know what has gone wrong out here. Representing my country means everything to me and I want to perform at my ultimate best always but that's just not happened this Paralympics.

"I'm gutted I've missed my son's birth for this terrible performance, but I gave what I could. I'm deeply sorry I've let the country and my team-mates down."
