The Pittsburgh Penguins raised their Stanley Cup banner before edging the Washington Capitals in the NHL, while the Rangers won the battle of New York.

The Penguins, who beat the San Jose Sharks in last season's Finals, recorded a 3-2 shoot-out victory over the Capitals.

Evgeni Malkin made a strong start to the campaign with a goal and an assist in his side's win.

The battle of New York went the way of the Rangers, who overcame the Islanders 5-3 following a wild third period.

For the Buffalo Sabres, they started their season with a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens and an injury to Evander Kane.

PENGUINS WIN OPENER

While Malkin did the job offensively, Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury played a key role with 39 saves.

After Phil Kessel scored in the fourth round of the shoot-out, Fleury stopped Alex Ovechkin to secure the win.

WILD FINISH IN NEW YORK

There were six goals scored in a thrilling third period in New York.

After the Islanders had come from 2-0 down to level at 2-2, Chris Kreider, Brandon Pirri and J.T. Miller netted key goals for the Rangers.

CANADIENS OUTPLAY SABRES

Brendan Gallagher scored twice for the Canadiens in their comfortable win.

Making matters worse for the Sabres, they lost left wing Kane to an upper-body injury late in the second period.
