League leaders Canterbury got back to winning ways in the Mitre 10 Cup by overcoming Otago 45-34, while Tasman triumphed over Hawke's Bay in a battle between the bottom two in Napier.

After surprisingly losing to Manawatu last time out, defending champions Canterbury ran in seven 11 tries in an entertaining match in Christchurch.

Johnny McNicholl played an integral role in multiple scores, getting one of his own after showing phenomenal pace to touch down in the corner off Richie Mo'unga's kick.

Tasman took a step towards safety by defeating bottom side Hawke's Bay 36-29, Marty Banks scoring 16 points for the visitors.

Five points now separate the two sides, with Hawke's Bay having played one game more than their fellow strugglers.

Second-placed Taranaki produced a strong second-half display to defeat Manawatu 30-19 and stay within reach of Canterbury.

After heading to half-time trailing 16-15, Taranaki added a further 15 points and limited their opponents to a single penalty from Otere Black.
