Connor McDavid led the Edmonton Oilers to a win in the NHL, but the day belonged to Auston Matthews.

McDavid, the first pick overall in 2015, scored twice and had an assist as the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 7-4.

But there was no overshadowing the performance of Matthews.

Matthews, the top pick in 2016, scored an extraordinary four goals on debut in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 5-4 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators.

There were also wins for the St Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks on the opening day of the season.

MATTHEWS DOMINATES

It was quite the performance by 19-year-old Matthews.

He became the first player in the modern era to score four goals in his first NHL game in an incredible display.

However, Kyle Turris netted the winner for the Senators 37 seconds into overtime.

MCDAVID MAKES STRONG START

McDavid made a similarly impressive start to the season, although he took a little longer to get going.

The 19-year-old broke open a 3-3 game late in the second period with two goals in a matter of minutes.
