Carmelo Anthony said it is important for the New York Knicks to make a splash during the free-agency period as the NBA strugglers attempt to overturn their woes.

The Knicks are set to miss the play-offs for a third consecutive season but the New York franchise will have at least $18million in cap space to rejuvenate their roster.

Point guards Rajon Rondo and Mike Conley have been touted as potential recruits.

And nine-time All-Star Anthony, who had a sit down with Knicks president Phil Jackson, said: "It's kind of an even playing field, so you've just got to hit the ground running.

"It's in their court. The ball is in their court.

"They have an opportunity, we have an opportunity to do something this off-season. We gotta do something. It's there."

Anthony and Jackson are at the centre of a team who are going nowhere fast.

Both men decided it was time they had a face-to-face meeting to discuss the future.

"I thought it was a good time for us to sit down and talk," he said.??"It was more of just an open dialogue.

"Questions that I had. I won't go into details about those questions. It was good for me to get it out there. Talk about it. Get his response and feedback. That was that."
